Travel Guide

Travel phrasebook

Twenty-five phrases you will actually reach for — greetings, directions, food and emergencies — in twelve languages, each with a pronunciation guide and what it means in English.

How to read the pronunciation guide

The guides are approximate, written for an English speaker, and meant to be understood rather than to be precise. In Latin-script languages, capital letters mark the stressed syllable and a hyphen separates syllables; “(n)” is a nasal vowel. Japanese, Korean, Thai and Arabic are shown in a simple romanisation. Mandarin is shown in pinyin with tone marks. A native speaker will forgive the accent — say it slowly and point at the phrase if it does not land.
